A broken stock does not always need to be replaced. cracks can be pinned and epoxied, most dings that do not remove chunks can be steamed out and many small breaks or missing bits can be replaced, and dents without missing wood can be steamed back to proper level. Below is an example common to many older guns, a broken toe. |
This is a French 16Ga. double of my own. The piece of wood that broke out had been gone since my grandfathers days. |

First the break is shaved smooth to allow a good bond with the new piece. |


Here is the piece of walnut selected to create a new toe. |
The new block epoxied and clamped. |

I left a slight difference in color since this old gal is entitled to show her battle
scars. With a bit of stain feathered on the stock, it could have been made nearly invisible. |
